The mafia in Italy is similar but different than in the U.S. Though sometimes the U.S. Cosa Nostra brings over members from Italy because they adhere more to the old school ways and do things quiet. Movies | ‘Shooting the Mafia’ Review: Crime Through a Watchful Lens This documentary about the Sicilian photographer Letizia Battaglia is short on the whens and the hows of her story. Credit... Letizia Battaglia/Cohen Media Shooting the Mafia Directed by Kim Longinotto Documentary, Biography 1h 34m In the United States, too many people reflexively associate the murderous Italian-born crime entity called the Mafia with the pop culture products it inspires. But for the common people of Sicily, and its capital, Palermo, the Mafia has been a long-term waking nightmare, yielding incredibly high murder rates and viral, nearly all-encompassing corruption. The photojournalist Letizia Battaglia started photographing Mafia crime scenes in Palermo, her hometown, in the mid-1970s. “Shooting the Mafia” is a documentary about her life, directed by Kim Longinotto, whose prior work focuses on women in social crises the world over, with an emphasis on their personal stories. This movie is no exception, which might be a source of frustration to some viewers. The movie begins with Battaglia as she is today: a vital and energetic woman in her early 80s whose bright hair color has a punk exuberance. Speaking of her work, she states, “I began taking pictures when I was 40. ” Soon, she insists, “Before finding the camera, I was not a person. ” Which arguably begs the question of why Longinotto spends so much time on Battaglia’s early years. And does so in a way that’s confounding to follow. The director doesn’t cite any dates as she introduces a series of friends and lovers from Battaglia’s past. Battaglia’s fraught childhood, her marriage and the birth of her three children, and her affair with a lover who rattles conventional standards of domesticity are all interesting, but you’re left with a near-constant question: “O. K., so this is when? ” In stills from these unnamed years, the young Battaglia is a fierce beauty whose bearing gives off signals both seductive and combative (her surname means “battle”). Clips from a few vintage Italian movies also illustrate, at times rather obliquely, Battaglia’s anecdotes. It’s not until 45 minutes in that the film cites a specific year of her life, and it takes longer still before a prominent Mafia criminal is named. Battaglia goes to work for the leftist Palermo newspaper L’Ora, but Longinotto deigns not to present a single page from that publication, or to bring up any specific reports that feature Battaglia’s work. The photos Battaglia took during her career — in the early 2000s, in semi-retirement, she turned to art photography — are fearless, striking; scenes of the aftermaths of senseless murders and spontaneous, on-the-move portraits of crusading anti-Mafia political figures like the prosecuting magistrate Giovanni Falcone, who was murdered by the mob in 1992. Battaglia passionately admired the man, just as Longinotto clearly looks up to Battaglia. This tribute, though, is idiosyncratic to the point of alienation. Shooting the Mafia Not rated. In Italian, with subtitles. Running time: 1 hour 34 minutes.
